The Top 250 Players of All-Time: 120-111

In February 2013 up in the attic bedroom of our student house, Gareth Thomas, Ben Jones and Ollie Jackson after another prolonged football debate decided it was time we did something about the question, 'Who is the best player in the World?'. Housemate Liam suggested setting out to find the greatest 50 players of all time, this swiftly grew to 100, 150 and 200 before we settled on 250. Our original website www.top250.webs.com is still there to answer the debate but we furthered our work to blogging about the beautiful game starting up www.thefootballhistoryboys.blogspot.com.

Missed the last installment? Get on it!

"How do you endear yourself to a new set of fans? Simply follow Freddie Ljungberg’s lead and score just seconds into your debut against Manchester United. It set the precedent for a man who became one of the most loved Arsenal players of the Arsène Wenger era. For almost 10 years the Gunners’ No 8 was a devout servant to the Club’s cause, epitomising his manager’s philosophy of attractive football, athleticism and enjoyment of the game." Arsenal's Greatest 50 Players List

He sits on the precipice of a century of international caps after being the star man for his country in Euro 2008 making the 'Team of the Tournament' and World Cup 2010 finishing second in the Golden Ball (Player of the Tournament). The attacking midfielder's disappointment at his World Cup final loss in 2010 can be sweetened by his impressive trophy cabinet across the four European giants he has played for." Liverpool's 100 Players Who Shook The Kop

Speed's tragic death in 2011 sent shockwaves through football and for me personally, attending his memorial match v Costa Rica was one of the most emotional experiences of my life. Gary Speed was loved by all." Gareth Thomas - TFHB

130. Brian LAUDRUP

POSITION: Forward;

NATION: Denmark (82/21);

CLUB(s): Brondby (DEN), Bayer Uerdingen (GER), Bayern Munich (GER), Fiorentina (ITA), Milan (ITA), Rangers (SCO), Chelsea (ENG), Copenhagen (DEN), Ajax (NED);

CLUB HONOURS: 2x Danish 1st Division, 1x DFL-Supercup, 1x Serie A, 1x UEFA Champions League, 3x Scottish Premier League, 1x Scottish League Cup, 1x Scottish Cup, 1x UEFA Super Cup;

INTERNATIONAL HONOURS: 1x UEFA European Championship, 1x FIFA Confederations Cup

"His close control was extraordinary. The ball just obeyed his wishes. And because he had such electrifying acceleration, he could tear through midfield, release a pass and have time to reach an entirely different area of the pitch to be in for the kill."
Rangers.co.uk

129. Jamie CARRAGHER

POSITION: Defender;

NATION: England (38/0);

CLUB: Liverpool (ENG);

CLUB HONOURS: 2x FA Cup, 3x Football League Cup, 1x FA Youth Cup, 2x FA Community Shield, 1x UEFA Champions League, 1x UEFA Cup, 2x UEFA Super Cup

"He’s been a bedrock of their defensive qualities for years and years. I loved him. He’s a fantastic example for any young lad that wants to play the game. He’s been a really, really good professional. ‘He’s absolutely the type of player a manager wants. I used to rave about Brucie [Steve Bruce] and the nine years he had with us, and I think Jamie Carragher is that exact same mould - can play with injuries, gets knocked about and gets back up, hardly misses a game."
Sir Alex Ferguson

128. Petr CECH

POSITION: Goalkeeper;

NATION: Czech Republic (105/0);

CLUB(s): Chmel Blsany (CZE), Sparta Prague (CZE), Rennes (FRA), Chelsea (ENG);

CLUB HONOURS: 3x FA Premier League, 4x FA Cup, 2x Football League Cup, 2x FA Community Shield, 1x UEFA Champions League, 1x Europa League;

INTERNATIONAL HONOURS: 1x UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship

"However, he saved his finest hour for when it mattered most, in the Champions League Final. Firstly, he saved an Arjen Robben penalty in extra-time with the score level at 1-1, while in the shoot-out he made successive stops from both Olic and Schweinsteiger to give us the advantage from which Didier Drogba was able to capitalise on. A disappointing sixth-placed league finish was instantly rendered academic."
Chelsea.com

127. GERSON

POSITION: Midfielder;

NATION: Brazil (70/14);

CLUB(s): Flamengo, Botafogo, Sao Paulo, Fluminense

CLUB HONOURS: 1x Taca Brasil, 3x Torneio Rio-Sao Paulo, 3x Rio de Janeiro State Championship, 2x Sao Paulo;

INTERNATIONAL HONOURS: 1x FIFA World Cup

"Gerson was the link between defence and attack, a studious passer of the ball and a tactically astute player who was integral to holding Brazil’s many components together as one efficient footballing machine. His influence was noted during the 1970 final, a game in which Gerson was given the man-of-the-match award for scoring the third goal of the match to make it 2-1 to Brazil and for the way in which he effortlessly orchestrated so many of his team’s attacks as they played their way into the history books."
Soccerlens

126. Frank DE BOER

POSITION: Defender;

NATION: Netherlands (112/13);

CLUB(s): Ajax (NED), Barcelona (SPA), Galatasaray (TUR), Rangers (SCO), Al Rayyan (QAT), Al-Shamal (QAT);

CLUB HONOURS: 5x Eredivisie, 2x KNVB Cup, 3x Johan Cruijff Shield, 1x UEFA Champions League, 1x UEFA Cup, 1x UEFA Super Cup, 1x Intercontinental Cup, 1x La Liga

"If you said, ‘describe a defender that could play for Holland, Ajax and Barcelona’ what qualities would you expect? Style and elegance on the ball, a wide range of passing, stepping in to midfield, tactical intelligence, positioning and intercepting. In other words, Frank de Boer. The very epitome of the ball playing centre half who used his brains rather than brawn to shut down the opposition. De Boer won 112 caps for Holland, many of which as captain, and scored an impressive 13 goals. From his Ajax debut in 1988 through to leaving Barcelona in 2003 De Boer was one of the best defenders in the world. He was metronomically consistent and led with a quiet authority."

CLUB HONOURS: 1x Coppa Italia, 1x UEFA Champions League;

INTERNATIONAL HONOURS: 1x FIFA World Cup

"West Germany’s number one striker in the 1980s, Rudi Völler, won his first cap against Northern Ireland in late 1982. Born in Hanau, he won the Player of the Year award the following year, as well as ending up as topscorer in the Bundesliga playing for Werder Bremen. Völler was a typical goalgetter kind of player. He rarely scored spectacular goals, but was great with the ball at his feet and could beat a man or two before scoring. He was also a master inside the penalty-area."

He brings defensive stability, is strong in the air and from set pieces, and has leadership skills.

He is one of the best defenders around in the game when he is in good form."
Jose Mourinho

"Larsson is a legend for the club, playing a central part in the revitalisation of the club as it once again dominated Scottish football having been in the doldrums for much of the previous 15 years. He broke domestic scoring records and was the talisman to take the club to the UEFA Cup final in 2003. He was a truly world class player."

INTERNATIONAL HONOURS: 1x FIFA World Cup, 1x UEFA European Championships

"Puyol is the key, not just because he is one of the best defenders in the world but because of his character. He never lets up."
Xavi

"Partly, it is the hair, that thick, floppy, unstyled mane that gives off a mistaken impression of Puyol The Primitive. But it's also the in-your-face-competitor Puyol enacts so vividly on the field for his club, Barcelona, and for the Spanish national team."

140. RUI COSTA

POSITION: Midfielder;

NATION: Portugal (94/26);

CLUB(s): Benfica (POR), Fafe (POR), Fiorentina (ITA), Milan (ITA)

CLUB HONOURS: 1x Taça de Portugal, 1x Primeira Liga, 3x Coppa Italia, 2x Supercoppa Italiana, 1x Serie A, 1x UEFA Champions League, 1x UEFA Super Cup

"Rui Costa wasn’t just an immensely talented playmaker whose sublime skills graced Serie A; he was also a member of a now rare breed of footballer, those who are loyal to their clubs and put that loyalty before monetary gain.  On the pitch his mesmerizing skill and superb range of passing caused endless problems for defenders. Costa can be held up as a shining example of  how an attacking midfielder should play – he could drift around the pitch and influence the game from anywhere, with pinpoint cross field passes slicing open defences." www.forzaitalianfootball.com

139. Patrick KLUIVERT

POSITION: Forward;

NATION: Netherlands (79/40);

CLUB(s): Ajax (NED), Milan (ITA), Barcelona (SPA), Newcastle United (ENG), Valencia (SPA), PSV Eindhoven (NED), Lille (FRA)

CLUB HONOURS: 3x Eredivisie, 2x Johan Cruijff Shield, 1x UEFA Champions League, 1x UEFA Super Cup, 1x Intercontinental Cup, 1x La Liga

"For such a tall player, Kluivert possessed a remarkably impressive ‘first touch’ and quick feet. Similar to footballer Ronaldo, he often used the Cruijff Turn to great effect to go past defenders. Kluivert also utilised his height and physique to dominate aerial balls and was considered to possess one of the best headers in the contemporary game." www.legendsinfootball.com

138. Marc OVERMARS

POSITION: Midfielder;

NATION: Netherlands (86/17);

CLUB(s): Go Ahead Eagles (NED), Willem II Tilburg (NED), Ajax (NED), Arsenal (ENG), Barcelona (SPA)

CLUB HONOURS: 3x Eredivisie, 1x KNVB Cup, 2x Johan Cruijff Shield, 1x UEFA Champions League, 1x UEFA Super Cup, 1x Intercontinentaal Cup, 1x FA Cup, 1x Premier League, 1x FA Charity Shield

"Overmars became a vital cog in the Arsenal machine which brought the Double back to Highbury in Wenger's first full season. That 1998 vintage had the power of Petit and Vieira and the guile of Bergkamp. Now the blistering pace of Overmars made them an awesome counter-attacking force.Bergkamp was probably the main man but Overmars was his ultimate wing man. Right backs all across the country were given a torrid time as Overmars ran at them and jinked inside or sprinted onto weighted passes inside the full back from the likes of Petit and Bergkamp." Arsenal's Greatest 50 Players
