Daily Mirror Online - Anxious peers won't have to worry about being caught short - after it was revealed there are enough toilets to serve their growing numbers.

The appointment of 30 new peers in August took the total number in the House of Lords to 785 - sparking fears there might not be enough loos.

However, chairman of committees Lord Sewel has moved to reassure members there are sufficient lavatories in the building.

In a written reply to Lord Foulkes of Cumnock, Lord Sewel revealed there were 57 male urinals, 85 male WCs, and 73 female WCs in the Lords, as well as 40 WCs "not assigned to either gender".

He also assured the former Labour minister there were enough toilets for members and staff, including those recently introduced into the House, in a "variety of scenarios" under health and safety rules.

Lord Sewel did, however, acknowledge that given the fluctuating number of peers, staff and visitors in the House from day to day, the "ratio of toilets per person is variable".

The House of Lords, whose members are unelected, is one of the largest legislatures in the world, second only to the Chinese National Party Congress.
